Black Hog Brewing
MICRO
ROUTE: I-84 West
Founded: 2014
Impression
Very cool recessed tables. Entire vibe is cool: big barn room with a sassy but professional bartendress and loud but enjoyable music.
BEERS TASTED
Beer 1: Hog Lager Pilsner (5.5% abv) A little sweet. Very cold (refreshing!) Not hugely bitter; more like an American Pale Ale. Big malt and foam! (Tasted at Black Hog 7/31/19.)
Beer 5: Pillow Talk IPA (7% abv) Blueberry on a wheat-like base. Very nice. (Tasted at Black Hog 7/31/19.)
Beer 2: Mo' Honey Mo' Problems Farmhouse Ale (4.2% abv) Nice honey-lemon taste, but not really farmhouse: kinda flat, not big on spice. (Tasted at Black Hog 7/31/19.)
Beer 6: Hog Water IPA with Spruce Tips, from Cask (7% abv) From Kinsman Brewery. Wow! Delicious! Not really piney except at very finish. Nice sour taste on attack and on mid-palate. Refreshing, but maintains full-bodied flavor throughout. (Tasted at Black Hog 7/31/19.)
Beer 3: Granola Brown Ale (5.7% abv) FIRST TASTING: Big coffee flavor. Good body to start that tapers off to neutral taste on back palate. Clean, very nice finish. (Tasted at Black Hog 7/31/19.) SECOND TASTING: really nice brown ale with body and flavor. (Tasted at the Third Annual Summer Beerfest at the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Waterbury 7/23/21.)
Beer 7: El Hefe Hefeweizen (7.0% abv). Very balanced, nice flavors, not too crazy on the banana, though present. Black Hog always seems to come through with quality. (Tasted at the Stack / Bear BBQ on 8/28/2019.)
Beer 4: Disco Pig 11.1 B.F.O. American Wild Ale Funky Brettt Saison (n/a abv) Wow! Big blueberries, but with a sour taste that is not as tart as one gets at other breweries; this beer relies more on its spice and complexity of flavor. (Tasted at Black Hog 7/31/19.)
Beer 8: Ginga Ninja Red IPA with Hibiscus & Ginger (6.5% abv) Delicious! (Tasted at the Third Annual Summer Beerfest at the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Waterbury 7/23/21.)
