Cambridge House Brew Pub
Impression
More sports-bar pub than brewpub, with 6 big-screen TVs, and tables around a central, bullpen bar. Dart boards. Separate room for more formal events Good crowd. CHBP has a neighborhood feel and is well-worn. It takes the Connecticut prize for "Local Joint" hands down. And not in a good way, because the locals do not appear to be too demanding at all, coming here out of habit or just because it's the only game in town. Measured enthusiasm from the waitresses, as if trying to telegraph not to expect much. The reuben was solid: balanced, cheesy, with very soft pastrami, no sinew and no gristle. The salad had warm croutons, but the salad was wilted and the tomatoes were soft. The music was straight out of the 1970s, with Toto, and Geddy Lee's Journey. Could the beer save this tired joint? Alas, CHBP has just about the worst beer in the State. Only one brewery competes with it for the bottom, and they stayed in business only 6 months. The brewing is uninspired, and the taps are clearly not cleaned on a regular basis. This place wasn't just disappointing. It was infuriating, and I kept thinking about the extra miles I had put in to get there when I could have visited other breweries instead. My second visit, about 3 years later because I had been told CHBP had improved, was even worse.
