Impression
Cottrell was one of the first craft breweries in Connecticut, and it was painful to realize that they had lost their zest for the brewing game. I visited about five months before they closed, in 2021. The brewery was on a classic industrial site that had been a printing company in the family of the brewery owner. Pawcatuck is an old shipbuilding and mill town full of character. One half-expects Captain Ahab to walk out of an alley between warehouse buildings and command the Pequod to get underway.
Beers Tasted
Beer 1: Glory Czech Pilsner (4.7% abv) Good standard pilsner. Good carbonation & bitterness. A Lawnmower Beer. (Tasted at Cottrell 7/3/21)
Beer 2: Off Duty Blonde/Golden Summer Ale (4.9% abv) No flavor. (Tasted at Cottrell 7/3/21)
Beer 5: Incredibly Pretentious DIPA (7.5% abv) Big, huge hops with bitterness on finish. Made to be juicy, but still too juicy. Over the top. (Tasted at Cottrell 7/3/21)
Beer 6: Perry's Revenge Scotch Ale./ Wee Heavy (8.5% abv) Too much spice, and tasted like coffee candy, not coffee. (Tasted at Cottrell 7/3/21)
Beer 3: Old Yankee Red Ale (5.0% abv) Cottrell's flagship beer. Again, no flavor. (Tasted at Cottrell 7/3/21)
Beer 4: Mystic Bridge Belgian IPA (6.5% abv) More malt than hops, but altogether fairly balanced. Bitter on end; dry. But not really thrilling in any appreciable way. (Tasted at Cottrell 7/3/21)
