Impression
Keegan Ales has a bit of a biker vibe, but it's mellow, not in-your-face. There are individuals and even families here, just chillin'. Aware of others, but only really engaging with the hard-working, excellent Irish-modern band that is playing the classics. Food is a charcuterie/cheese tray with Breton crackers, pepperoni, REALLY delicious crumbly cheddar, pear slices, and smoked gouda. The inside of Keegan is very dark, so you don't stay indoors, especially in summer. Kingston is a bit run-down, but no one seems to care, and you probably shouldn't either: Keegan Ales is one of the best beer stops between The Battery and Albany.
BEERS TASTED
Beer 1: Old Capital (4% abv) Nice golden-ale style; richer and heavier than an American pale lager. Like a Bud, if it used only the best ingredients.
Beer 2: Hudson Lager (4% abv) Full-bodied, but not tons of flavor. Great carbonation, though, and good malt flavor. Terrific finish.
Beer 3: Mother's Milk Milk Stout (5% abv) Very like Guinness in weight, but more roast and chocolate. Not sweet, mind you. Just nice. (Said to be in the NY Times top ten in America at one time.)
Beer 4: Joe Mama's Milk (8% abv) Coffee Milk Stout. Big coffee, with a very natural taste. Less carbonated than Mother's Milk, with nice chcocolate undertones. Voted #1 beer in NY State.
