Impression

Cottrell was one of the first craft breweries in Connecticut, and it was painful to realize that they had lost their zest for the brewing game. I visited about five months before they closed, in 2021. The brewery was on a classic industrial site that had been a printing company in the family of the brewery owner. Pawcatuck is an old shipbuilding and mill town full of character. One half-expects Captain Ahab to walk out of an alley between warehouse buildings and command the Pequod to get underway.

BEERS TASTED

Beer 1: Standard Deviation: Idaho/Mosaic NEIPA (6.5% abv) Great carbonation, not heavy, with great cream flavor and citrus that is very precise. Excellent ratio of cream to citrus. Complex flavors. Delicious. (Tasted at Tate's 3/20/25.)

Beer 1: Double Standard Imperial IPA (8.2% abv) some faint toast flavor. Good beer with good carbonation, just not flavorful as the Standard Deviation NEIPA. (Tasted at Tate's 3/20/25.)

Beer 1: Lil Nelly NEIPA (5.2% abv) Well-made, but ultimately average+ IPA. (Tasted at Tate's 3/20/25.)
